Moab Cave House

Moab Trip Day Three: Dewey Bridge Abandoned Cave House.

Today was our last day in Moab and we wanted to look for this cave house that we had heard about and that we wanted to see.  It took some searching but we found it.

It used to be inhabited and there are still remnants of the plumbing and electrical fixtures inside. The house was two floors.  The main floor had a kitchen on the far right side and a family room area with a fireplace on the far left side.  Strait in the center to the back is a large staircase that leads up and to the right to a second floor bedroom.  The bedroom has two openings that could of been doors or windows. It was very interesting to explore and wonder how and why anyone would want to live in a house like this.

To get there, take Highway 128 in Moab, which is the road that runs on the south side of the Colorado River. Go east for 26 miles on that highway. You'll pass Dewey Recreation area and an out of use suspension bridge. About one mile past the bridge, on the left side of the road there is an opening in a roadside gate to a sandy alcove along a sandstone formation. You can enter the wash and look to the left for what looks like an old road that goes up for 100 yards and the house is at the top. It overlooks a huge field across the street. GPS coordinates 12S 0648745, 4297775

Here is what would have been the front of the house.

This would have been the family room.  A big chunk of the ceiling has fallen down.

Here is one last photo of the bedroom taken from the hallway.  You can see that the room is fairly large.
